Prairie Discovery Day at Fertig Prairie

PRAIRIE DISCOVERY DAY AT FERTIG TALLGRASS PRAIRIE

On Thursday, 27 September, I spent the day at one of Audubon's tallgrass prairies, Fertig Prairie; only 1% of Nebraska's tallgrass prairie remains. This trip to Fertig Tallgrass Prairie near Schuler, NE, marks the fourth year in a row that the Wachiska Audubon Society has sponsored Prairie Discovery day.

At Fertig Prairie, 100 fifth graders learned some prairie history, captured and identified a wealth of insects, and wrote about bugs and birds. At this site, you will find a slide show of the fun.

In the past years, Wachiska Audubon also organized Prairie Discovery Day at Yutan Prairie and at Wildcat Creek Prairie. Click on the links and enjoy the photographs of youngsters discovering an important part of their Nebraska heritage.

And watch the short (10 minute) video of the (windy) prairie fun.

Great-horned Owl at Daryl's Farm

My friend Daryl called me a couple weeks ago (around the middle of September) to tell me that he had caught a Great-horned Owl feeding on his Cornish Rock Hens. So, the next morning, I visited the farm, befriended a couple chickens, and took these pictures of a very unhappy Great-horned Owl that soon winged its way out of the coop.
